Adelaide hosted the WorldSkills Australia 2024 Australian Skills Excellence Forum
Over 100 Skills Champions took part in workshops to elevate careers to the next level
WorldSkills Australia is proud to partner with the South Australian Government who brought the 2024 Australian Skills Excellence Forum to Adelaide, from the 25th to the 27th of July 2024.
Over 100 young trainees, professionals and apprentices participated in the three-day event, focussed on Up-Skilling and career growth.
Leading industry experts from 31 skills including Cyber Security, Carpentry, Cookery and Welding hosted workshops and hands-on sessions that taught participants advanced skills that build upon the knowledge gained in their vocational training courses.
In addition, the Forum also provided professional development skills, including how to manage their own small businesses, personal brand and utilise social and digital media to build their profiles within the industry.
Participants in the Australian Skills Excellence Forum represented some of the best young talent in Australia, with many awarded medals in their respective events in the 2023 WorldSkills Australia National Championships. Others are upcoming stars who are looking to compete at the 2024 Regional Competitions.
Blair Boyer MP, Minister for Education, Training and Skills addressed the participants, training leads and key stakeholders at Adelaide Oval. MasterChef alumni and champion of Adelaide’s hospitality industry, Laura Sharrad, also spoke on her skills journey that has seen her become a successful business owner.
The Skills Excellence Forum took place at several locations across Adelaide, including TAFE SA campuses, Lot Fourteen, BAE Systems, R.M Williams, MTA SA/NT, the Adelaide Training and Employment Centre (ATEC), SAGE’s Skills Lab, Workspace Commercial Furniture, PEER and a number of Heritage Trust sites.
WorldSkills Australia would like to thank the Federal Government, the State Government and South Australian Skills Commission, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and other skill sector stakeholders for their support of this important initiative.

THE EVENT
Day 1 - Networking Event
The Skills Excellence Forum kicked off in grand style at the prestigious Stamford Plaza in Adelaide, where participants gathered for an enriching networking evening. The event began with an air of excitement as attendees arrived, eager to connect and engage. The highlight of the evening was an inspiring speech delivered by South Australian Skills Commissioner, Cameron Baker, and WorldSkills Australia CEO, Trevor Schwenke, who both emphasised the critical role of networking in career success and industry growth.
The evening was not just about formalities; it was designed to be interactive and fun. Participants enjoyed engaging networking games, including a captivating "Guess Who" activity. This game encouraged attendees to ask questions and discover intriguing facts about one another, fostering an environment of camaraderie and connection.
The primary goal of this inaugural event was clear: to provide an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another better and to enhance their networking skills. Effective networking is a vital element in any industry, and this evening was a perfect start to building meaningful professional relationships.
As participants mingled, exchanged ideas, and enjoyed the evening’s activities, the foundation was laid for a successful and impactful forum.
Day 2 - Up-Skilling
Day two of the Appustralian Skills Excellence Forum was all about expanding horizons through the Up-Skilling activity. This unique event provided participants from various industries the chance to step out of their usual training routines and explore new, practical skills that complement their primary expertise.
Carpenters took on the challenge of learning the basics of welding. Under expert guidance, they mastered foundational techniques essential for many real-world tasks they encounter on the job. This hands-on experience broadened their capabilities, adding a valuable skill to their repertoire.
The visual merchandising participants had an exciting opportunity to collaborate with talented florists. Together, they crafted a stunning window display featuring RM Williams merchandise, generously provided by the iconic brand. This creative exercise not only enhanced their visual presentation skills but also fostered teamwork and innovation.
Painters delved into learning a new painting technique, expanding their artistic abilities and adding a fresh dimension to their craft. This session allowed them to experiment and refine their techniques, enhancing their versatility and creativity.
In total, 31 different skills had the opportunity for Up-Skilling.
The Up-Skilling activity was a resounding success, offering participants the chance to gain new skills that are not typically covered in their RTO training. By exploring these additional competencies, attendees are better prepared to meet diverse challenges in the workforce, making them more adaptable and proficient professionals.
Day 2 - Formal Dinner
The second day of the Australian Skills Excellence Forum culminated in a prestigious formal dinner at the iconic Adelaide Oval. Attendees were treated to an evening of inspiring speeches, delicious food, and excellent company.
We were honored by the presence of Blair Boyer MP, Minister for Education, Training, and Skills, Government of South Australia, who delivered an insightful address on the importance of skills development and training. South Australia Skills Commissioner Cameron Baker also shared his vision for the future of vocational education and training.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Harry Baker, a WorldSkills Australia Nationals Gold Medalist, who proudly received his Trade Certificate for his plumbing apprenticeship. His achievements underscored the value of dedication and hard work in mastering a trade.
Further enriching the evening, WorldSkills Australia CEO Trevor Schwenke and Chair of the Board Kevin Harris provided valuable perspectives on the organization's goals and the significance of skills excellence in Australia.
The dinner featured two compelling keynote speakers: Chris Blowes and Anton Andreacchino. Their engaging presentations captivated the audience, offering unique insights and inspiration.
As attendees enjoyed a their dinner, the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and celebration. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, reflect on the day's events, and anticipate the future of skills training in Australia.
Overall, the evening was a resounding success, filled with moments of pride, inspiration, and the joy of coming together to celebrate the best in skills excellence.
Day 3
The third day of the Australian Skills Excellence Forum was dedicated to an enriching Conference Day, featuring a diverse lineup of speakers who addressed a wide array of topics relevant to today's workforce.
The day began with an engaging session by Lauren Clemett, a renowned personal brand speaker, who provided valuable insights into building and maintaining a strong personal brand. Her session empowered attendees with strategies to enhance their professional presence and stand out in their industries.
Next, Laura Sharrad, a successful business owner and MasterChef contestant, shared her entrepreneurial journey. Her talk highlighted the challenges and triumphs of running a business and offered practical advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in the culinary world and beyond.
Annie Harvey took the stage to discuss workplace wellbeing and mental health. Her session underscored the importance of maintaining mental health in high-pressure environments and provided actionable tips for creating a healthier, more supportive workplace.
Peter Treseder from Australian Super provided an informative presentation on superannuation and financial planning, emphasising the importance of long-term financial security and effective planning for the future.
Jenn Donovan captivated the audience with her talk on marketing and AI for small businesses in 2024. She explored the latest trends and technologies that are transforming the marketing landscape, equipping small business owners with the tools to stay competitive and innovative.
Chris Blowes delved into the intricacies of developing quotes and job costings. His session was particularly beneficial for attendees as it offered practical techniques, tips and tricks that covered the entire quoting process including talking to the prospective client through to developing a professional quote and the components that needed to be considered when constructing the quote.
Overall, Conference Day was a resounding success, providing participants with a wealth of knowledge and practical advice from industry experts. The diverse topics and dynamic speakers ensured that there was something valuable for everyone, making it a truly enriching experience for all attendees.

BASE CAMP enthusiastically accepts the official invitation from Lewis Italiano, an outstanding craftsman from the WorldSkills Australia team, and his Expert Nick Johnston. Oscar, the head of the BASE CAMP Asia team, led the team to meet them in Wuhan.

Lewis Italiano won Gold in Cabinetmaking at the 2023 WorldSkills Australia Competition and will represent Australia at the 47th International Competition in Lyon, France, in September. We wish the outstanding craftsman Lewis Italiano every success as he competes under the expert invaluable guidance of Nick Johnston, representing Australia in the WorldSkills competition.

The WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions are currently in full swing!
Regional competitions across Australia are bustling with activity! Held every two years in 34 regions nationwide, these events rigorously assess the skills and knowledge of over 4000 apprentices, trainees, and students. Participants compete for coveted gold, silver, and bronze medals, with aspirations to advance to the national stage of competition. It's been exciting to witness the highlights so far, and we eagerly anticipate more to come!
To be eligible to enter a Regional competition, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Be undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship in an Australian RTO/TAFE/University
- Be undertaking studies towards a qualification at an Australian RTO/TAFE or University
- Undertaken/completed a relevant qualification at an Australian RTO/TAFE or University
- There is no age criteria to enter the Regionals, however, to be eligible to proceed to the 2025 National Championships, the National Age Ruling will apply.

Cloud Computing
AWS are pleased to be supporting the WorldSkills Australia Cloud Computing Virtual Regional Event for 2024, to give you the opportunity to demonstrate and improve your cloud skills in a fun environment.
Virtual Skills Competitions are held remotely and are open to competitors anywhere in Australia. Successful competitors may be offered a chance to compete at the 2025 WorldSkills Australia National Championships, due to be held in Brisbane in June 2025.
