Australia’s Rising Stars Named in National Training Squad for Shanghai 2026
We’re excited to share some big news! WorldSkills Australia has officially announced the 39 young apprentices, trainees and professionals who make up our National Training Squad — the first step towards selection for Team Australia, set to represent the nation at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China (22–27 September 2026).
Drawn from across every state and territory, these talented individuals proved their skills at the 2025 National Championships in Brisbane, earning medals across 35 skill categories — from carpentry, plumbing and patisserie to cyber security, additive manufacturing and graphic design.
Over the next 12 months, the squad will embark on an intensive training program, honing their technical skills, building resilience, and preparing to take on more than 1,400 competitors from 60+ countries in what is known as the world’s largest skills excellence event.
The squad’s journey begins with a team development camp designed to strengthen team bonds and prepare them for the honour of wearing the green and gold. The squad will then be officially launched at Parliament House, Canberra, on 1 September, with Minister for Skills and Training Andrew Giles MP, WorldSkills Patron Brendan O’Connor, MPs, TAFE leaders and industry representatives in attendance.
This announcement also aligns with National Skills Week — a celebration of vocational education and the essential role of skilled careers in shaping Australia’s future workforce.
At a time when skills shortages continue to affect industries nationwide, the WorldSkills program shines a spotlight on the value of trades and training pathways, inspiring young Australians to see skills-based careers as both rewarding and future-focused.

These young people have proven themselves among the best in the country and now have the opportunity to show the world just how strong and competitive Australian skills excellence is. Behind every squad member is a dedicated trainer, mentor, and a VET system that equips young people with real-world skills and career pathways. We’re incredibly proud to support this next generation as the take their first step toward the world stage.”

These rising stars represent just a snapshot of the incredible skill and dedication that is shown by apprentices, trainees and students right across Australia – and showcasing to other Australians the endless possibilities that come from pursuing vocational education and training.”
Quotes attributable to WorldSkills Australia Patron and former Minister for Skills and Training, Hon Brendan O’Connor: “As WorldSkills Australia Patron I couldn’t be more proud of this amazing squad and wish them all the very best in their pursuit of competing in Shanghai. 75 Years of Skills, Stories & Stepping Up to Shine
As WorldSkills International celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025, we’re looking forward to welcoming a brand-new #Skillaroos Training Squad.
But before we look ahead, let’s take a step back.
In August 1983, Australia made its debut on the global stage at the 27th WorldSkills Competition in Linz, Austria. For two weeks, from 15–28 August, our very first Skillaroos proudly represented the nation across a range of trades and skills.
Meet the team:
Dennis McCall (Press Toolmaking), Howard Crawford (Wood Patternmaking), Kenneth Xuereb (Fitting), Louise Ferguson (Ladies Hairdressing), Mark Eaves (Electric Welding), Michael Tiele (Carpentry), Peter Beveridge (Bricklaying), Peter Bordin (Construction Steel Work), Phillip Tjerkstra (Turning), Robyn Ellis (Cookery), Stephen Keogh (Jewellery), and Tony Pearce (Industrial Wiring).
These 12 pioneers paved the way for Australia’s ongoing success in WorldSkills, inspiring generations of young people to showcase their talent, resilience, and determination on the international stage.
Now, 42 years later, it’s our turn to celebrate their legacy, inspire the next generation, and continue to highlight the value of skills in a rapidly changing world.

VET Development Centre Conference – WorldSkills Panel Wrap-Up
Journeys of Excellence: Lessons from Skills Champions and Rising Stars
The WorldSkills panel was a standout session at the VET Development Centre Conference, giving delegates a powerful and personal insight into the pathways of Australia’s emerging skills champions.
Sebastian Battista, 2024 Skillaroo in Plumbing and Heating, spoke passionately about his journey from apprentice to international competitor, emphasising the dedication needed to perform on the world stage. Gemma Scott, a member of the 2026 Skillaroo Training Squad in Restaurant Service, reflected on the discipline and drive that WorldSkills demands, sharing her ambition and optimism for the future. Felix McPhail, also part of the 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad in Industry 4.0, gave a compelling perspective on how the competition is developing the advanced skills needed in tomorrow’s workplaces.
All three were enthusiastic in encouraging audience members to get involved with WorldSkills Australia programs within their own institutions, highlighting the profound impact the movement has had on their careers and the critical role it plays in building a culture of excellence across the vocational education and training sector.
